Pleasure.. the big picture

So.. why are we here? Its a big question.. asked by everyone at some point or another in our life. You can come to your own conclusions.. but for me.. its about pleasure.

Some people feel that pleasure is not within the realm of man to command or control… in the sense that its a gift from the universe/consciousness/’God’ (insert whatever you want here) to those who identify with life and sing praise for its beauty and wonder. To these people (one of which I am) it contains within it the meaning of life.

The word pleasure can stir up some mixed feelings and thoughts.. on one hand, its associated with the idea of ‘good’.. pleasurable sensations feel good, yummy food tastes ‘good’ and gives us pleasure etc.. yet alot of people would think that a life devoted to pleasure is a waste of a life. Our positive reaction to the word is often hedged with the thought that pleasure can lead a person down a scary path, make him/her forget their duties and obligations to others/career etc and even corrupt their nature of its not controlled. The dogmatic religious people over time have connected pleasure (especially sexual pleasure) to evil and identify it as the main temptation of the devil. At some level or another.. each person in our culture shares these misunderstandings and misgivings on some level.

The modern culture is so very ego-orientated that power (with everything that comes with it) has become the main goal and value. The issue is.. when you have this as your main priority, the fear of it not coming into being is also in play. The illusion is, seeing that pleasure is their driving force (for e.g. ‘when I’m rich and successful, i can have a life and time for pleasure’) that these ego-orientated achievements will make a life of pleasure possible – they are driven by goals which promise pleasure but require and demand a denial of pleasure in the process. The complete domination of our personality by the ego is a unhealthy perversion of the true nature of humans. The reality is that the ego was never meant to be the master of the body but instead serve the body. The body desires pleasure and the ego does nothing more than to demand power and control (not in the bdsm sense of control). Embodied pleasure is the source from which all genuine healthy feelings and thoughts emerge from. If bodily pleasure of a person is destroyed or not nurtured, they become angry, frustrated and all round shit.

Pleasure on the other hand is the only force strong enough to oppose the destructive potential of power. Many think that love is all you need to achieve anything and everything you want and not just on a personal level, but on a society wide level but I feel this isn’t so. If love is more than just a word we use to describe the indescribable then it must rest on the genuine experience of pleasure. Experiences of pleasure or pain determines our emotions, our thinking and ultimately our behaviour. When you dig deeper into the psychology and biology of pleasure and embrace its connection to the body, nature and the universe then you will come to an understanding that pleasure is the key to a creative and expressive life.

The only power I respect is one that when directed with intent produces pleasure .. and thus.. bringing the people involved in these experiences a more profound and deeper understanding of their life.
