Kinky desires do not automatically result from psychopathology and 6 science-backed benefits of consensual BDSM.

It has been generally thought that the practice of bondage-discipline, dominance-submission, sadism-masochism (BDSM) is in some form associated with psychopathology.

I’m sick to death of hearing the opinion from un-educated and ignorant people that interest in BDSM and Kink ‘automatically’ stems from childhood sexual abuse. This trope originated with Sigmund Freud. According to Freud, the combination of children being sexual, and perhaps the repeated act of spanking, whipping, or beating, is believed to lead to a life of sadomasochism.

Sure, some people who are active kinksters have been abused, BUT, statistically no more than vanilla (i.e non-kinky) people. In Australia in 2001–2002, a representative sample of 19,307 respondents aged 16–59 years were interviewed by telephone. In total, 1.8% of sexually active people (2.2% of men, 1.3% of women) said they had been involved in BDSM in the previous year.

Table 3 of the study showed that for neither men nor women was engagement in BDSM significantly related to having been sexually coerced ever or before age 16 years.

Women who participated in BDSM Sex: 13,6 % coerced before age 16 years

Women who did not participated in BDSM Sex: 13,3 % coerced before age 16 years

Men who participated in BDSM Sex: 5,2 % coerced before age 16 years

Men who did not participated in BDSM Sex: 2,6 % coerced before age 16 years

So it seems “childhood sexual abuse” generally is not the reason people participate in BDSM. If you think this, change your thinking now.

Recent studies for e.g. Wismeijer AAJ and van Assen MALM. Psychological characteristics of BDSM practitioners. J Sex Med 2013;10:1943–1952 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/jsm.12192 conclude that BDSM may be thought of as a recreational leisure, rather than the expression of psychopathological processes.

Let’s have a look at the science-based benefits to BDSM:
