Ways to process pain in BDSM play

There are many ways to process pain – the 2 ways I will focus on here are responsively and proactively.

This first method is the lack of any method at all. It’s a completely reactionary, unconscious, auto-response to pain. Many simply act out from the lizard-brain, bodily-bound reflex. They externalise their pain. They agonise, call out, roll on the floor, dramatise… they toil, they plead, they make quite a spectacle.

The other method is to consciously and mindfully engage and embrace pain as a process itself. This method is to use pain proactively as a vehicle of healing and release –  a practise that releases pent up energy and emotions. It’s the practice of transmuting pain itself into a vehicle of not only intimacy but of letting go of all the other emotions lurking around inside, and to breathe those out in gratitude as pain can be seen as a great gift from the experience of life. Many report a spiritual high, a lifting, and point of clarity that not only quietens the mind but brings them to a visceral wholeness.
